Self-tests / AUDIT

Alcohol use test (AUDIT)

The AUDIT is the World Health Organization's ten-question alcohol screening test, developed to identify hazardous and harmful drinking. It scores 0 to 40, and the WHO manual assigns four risk zones. One 'drink' means one standard drink (a 12 oz beer, 5 oz of wine, or 1.5 oz of spirits).

First, roughly how old are you?

Screening scores read differently at different ages. This lets us tell you what your result tends to mean in your decade, and what is worth ruling out first. It is not required, and it is not stored.

About the AUDIT

AUDIT (c) World Health Organization; reproduced for education with attribution from the WHO manual (2nd ed., 2001). This page carries no sponsored content.

Scored 0 to 40; items 9 and 10 score 0, 2 or 4. The WHO manual's zones: 0-7 Zone I, 8-15 Zone II, 16-19 Zone III, 20-40 Zone IV, and notes cutoffs may vary slightly by country and drinking patterns. The instrument is reproduced as published and scored exactly as the validation study scores it. A screening questionnaire estimates symptom severity over the past year; only a clinician can diagnose, and scores can be elevated by grief, medical illness or medications.
